| Hsinchu, Taiwan - March 4,
2002 - The world's leading network IC provider, Realtek Semiconductor Corp., today
announced mass production of its newly developed AC'97 audio CODEC, the ALC650. Realtek
Semiconductor is the industry's first firm to carry out a production plan for 6-channel
AC'97 audio CODECs, a move which indicates a booming market need for the 6-channel audio
device and serves as a drive to popularize PCs with high audio performance, making them
comparable to consumer audio equipment. The Realtek ALC650 is a high-end audio solution that provides consumer PCs with high-performance sound effects. Fully complying with AC'97 version 2.2 specifications, the ALC650 is equipped with complete advanced features, providing superior value. The new chip provides playback functions at a sample rate of 96KHz and is able to support DVD applications. This unique support represents a milestone in technology advancement for the industry. The 6-channel ALC650 is fully compatible with the traditional 2-channel interface. Embedded with Realtek's proprietary FlexJackR technology, the ALC650 is able to provide legacy interfacing with support for 6 channel outputs at the back panel with a dedicated microphone input at the front panel, eliminating the need for an external bracket, saving costs. The adoption of the ALC650 is the easiest and most economic way to upgrade PC audio systems from basic 2 channels to high-end 6 channels, satisfying users with a microphone function as well as excellent surround sound that can be produced only by 6 channels. The ALC650 also supports S/PDIF input and output, allowing digital connections with DVD systems or other audio/video multimedia. The ALC650 provides advanced media player, sound environment emulation and karaoke mode support. Realtek's proprietary ALSRACK media player is able to support CD/MP3/Midi/Wave music file formats and player skin changes. Emulation of 26 sound environments, including concert halls, stadiums and pubs, is also provided. The karaoke mode application features voice cancellation, voice key adjustment and an equalizer function. David Kung, Audio Product Manager of Realtek Semiconductor, expressed that the ALC650 development makes possible high-performance but low-cost audio entertainment for general PC users and marks well an age of 6 audio channel PCs for the consumer market. Packaged in a 48-pin LQFP, the ALC650 provides support for Intel, VIA, SiS and Ali chipsets with complete driver support and technical counseling services. A number of Taiwan's top-tier motherboard manufacturers have designed in the advanced ALC650 and have seen success with its full features and utilities as well as Realtek's comprehensive technical support.
