SRS Labs' Circle Surround II Multichannel Audio Technology Introduced To PC Market In New Software DVD Player

CS II and TruSurround XT Advance State-of-the-Art for Multichannel Audio Playback on the PC

SANTA ANA, Calif., July 18, 2002 – SRS Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ: SRSL), a leading provider of innovative audio, voice and ASIC technology solutions, today announced that it has licensed its Circle Surround II ™ (CS II) and TruSurround XT ™ audio technologies to Orion Studios, a multimedia software development company, for the latest version of their software DVD player, DirectDVD. DirectDVD is the first software product for the PC to feature SRS Labs’ advanced multichannel audio decoding technology, CS II, which creates up to 6.1 channels of high quality surround sound from mono, typical stereo sources (such as MP3 files), and other matrix surround encoded material. The player also includes SRS Labs’ patented TruSurround XT virtual surround sound technology featuring a headphone option. SRS Labs will receive a per-unit license for Orion software products shipped with SRS Labs’ audio technologies. Orion anticipates releasing the new DirectDVD software player by the end of this month.

The new DirectDVD software DVD player marks the debut of CS II for computers. PC users with multichannel sound cards will enjoy true, high quality, multichannel playback of their most popular media such as MP3 music files and movies. CS II also includes the patented SRS technologies Dialog Clarity ™ and TruBass ® , which provide consumers the ability to optimize audio playback of any content over any speaker system. For PC users with typical stereo playback systems, TruSurround XT provides the finest two-speaker virtual surround sound experience from the 5.1 multichannel audio soundtracks on DVDs. Orion also chose to include the TruSurround XT headphone function due to its superior and realistic performance. TruSurround is the established standard for virtual surround sound in hardware DVD players.

"The new DirectDVD software DVD player is the perfect product for any audio/video enthusiast who watches movies or listens to audio through their PC," said Jennifer Drescher, vice president of marketing for SRS Labs, Inc. "Whether you have two speakers, four speakers, headphones, or a full 5.1 speaker system, CS II and TruSurround XT provide the best possible audio experience for all your media requirements. It’s true home theater on a PC."

DirectDVD 4.47 brings the latest in video and audio innovation to a greater range of consumers using PCs to play DVDs. With enhancements to video overlays, CS II multichannel audio decoding, and TruSurround XT virtual surround sound, DirectDVD 4.47 enables consumers to have a compelling, home theater experience from their DVDs on the PC.

Tim Barker, director of business development for Orion Studios said, "The incorporation of SRS Labs’ technology into DirectDVD 4.47 sets new audio performance standards for PC DVD users. The combination of CS II, TruBass and Dialog Clarity make PC DVD playback with DirectDVD 4.47 an experience that is truly unmatched in the industry."

About Circle Surround II

Circle Surround II is the most powerful and advanced matrix surround decoder available on the market today. It delivers up to 6.1 channels of full-bandwidth audio with incredible rear surround separation from mono, stereo, Dolby Surround and Circle Surround encoded material. This backward compatibility provides a thrilling cinema-like audio experience from any audio content — MP3 files, CDs, games, VHS movies or television programming. Two advanced audio features from SRS Labs that further make CS II the compelling choice for matrix surround decoding are SRS Dialog Clarity and TruBass. SRS Dialog Clarity enables the listener to more easily and clearly discern actors’ dialog from the rest of the soundtrack. TruBass technology creates the sensation of deep, rich bass over the front channels and subwoofer through monitoring the original program for low frequency audio. About TruSurround XT

TruSurround XT from SRS is the most advanced technology for delivering virtual surround sound over standard, two-speakerplayback systems. It is based upon its namesake, the patented TruSurround technology, which is the established standard for virtual surround sound. While solving the problem of 5.1 multi-channel audio playback (from sources such as DVD, digital satellite, etc.) over two speakers or headphones, TruSurround XT also provides the unique SRS features of Dialog Clarity, WOW™ and TruBass. TruSurround has been featured in over 10 million consumer hardware products globally including products made by Aiwa, Emerson, Funai, Hughes Network Systems, Mitsubishi, Marantz, Philips, Pioneer, Sony, Sylvania, Thomson/RCA, Toshiba, and Yamaha. This technology is applicable to DVD players, televisions, set top boxes, video game consoles and A/V surround sound receivers.
