100 Million DTS-licensed Consumer Electronics Products Sold Worldwide Since 1997 |
| AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Aug.
12 /PRNewswire/ -- DTS announces a remarkable achievement in the company's history: more
than 100 million consumer electronics products sold to date contain DTS-licensed
technology and intellectual property. Introduced in 1997 as DTS Digital Surround, the
technology is now found in all segments of the industry, including home theater, car
audio, video game consoles, PC systems and broadcast applications. More than 300 consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide currently license DTS technology. DTS-licensed products include DVD players, receivers, amplifiers, pre-amps, video game consoles, car audio processors and head units, PC-based software decoders and 5.1-channel speaker systems for the PC. DTS Digital Surround is based on Coherent Acoustics, the company's patented scalable digital audio architecture. Unit sales of consumer electronics products with DTS Digital Surround reached 3,000 units in its first year of availability. Since then, DTS Digital Surround has developed new extensions of multi-channel audio technology, including DTS-ES (6.1-channel,) DTS Neo:6 (matrix surround,) DTS 96/24 (high resolution,) and DTS Interactive (for video games). "We are pleased that DTS technology has been widely advocated and actively embraced by artists, manufacturers and consumers. The growth is all the more remarkable when one considers that DTS represents an optional technology in many applications. The market is clear that quality, flexibility and scalability are important to the delivery and enjoyment of the entertainment experience," said Jon Kirchner, President and CEO. "The credit really goes to the talented, dedicated team of employees at DTS that has driven DTS' rapid growth in a very short period of time. With the industry's support behind us, in the future we intend to expand our services and to raise the bar on the audio experience in a host of new applications." Founded by entrepreneur and scientist Terry Beard, DTS debuted in 1993 in the motion picture industry with the premiere of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. Today, more than 21,000 motion picture screens worldwide utilize DTS Digital Sound playback systems. In addition to consumer electronics products, DTS licenses its technology to the professional audio industry and distributes its own encoder/decoder units via a global dealer network. DTS can also be found on many DVD-Video titles, its own DTS Entertainment-branded DVD-Audio titles, and video games for the PlayStation®2.
